It's been said before, but it's worth repeating: The Kona Odyssey (previously the Otway Odyssey) is one of the harder marathon races in Australia. But beyond being difficult, it is hugely rewarding. The singletrack network is a blast to ride, the event organisation is top notch, and the race is well supported by the local community. It is the sort of event that is worth travelling for.

The start on the Great Ocean Road from Apollo Bay was super early as usual. But with 100km to cover and a lot of climbing, everyone has to complete the race in sunlight. The Elite women's bunch rolled out just after 6.45am, and held both Subaru-MarathonMTB.com Team riders Naomi Hansen and Kath Bicknell. Half an hour later the Open Men were informally seeded. Without too much fanfare, we were told we had 15 seconds to go.
